After sections are adjusted, the level book has to match them. Import the final levels of any layer, toe points included, and CivilSurvey Expert works out B.S., I.S. and F.S. from your bench mark. Change points go in wherever the staff would run out, and the arithmetic check runs at the end.

How it works
In the app, step by step
- 01
Finish the sections
Generate, adjust and save the sections you want the book to match.
Ctrl+S - 02
Import series data
In a field book, pull in a layer's chainage, offset and R.L. from the section data. For layers after NSL, the left and right toe points come in too, remarked “Toe Point”.
Side panel › Import Series Data - 03
Set the bench mark
Row 2 holds the bench mark B.S. and R.L. that the readings are worked from.
Row 2 - 04
Set change-point rules
Staff reading maximum and minimum, and the remark text that forces a change point.
Change Point Settings · default 6 / 0 / CP - 05
Back calculate
Each reading is H.I. − R.L. When it would go past the staff limits, the row before becomes a change point and you enter its back sight. A recommended value is offered; values out of range or below it are refused.
Side panel › Back calculate - 06
Check and export
The last reading becomes a fore sight and the level check runs on its own. Export the book to Excel.

Common questions
Why would I need a reverse field book?
When sections have been adjusted after the survey, the level book should agree with the final sections. Back calculation produces readings that reduce to exactly those levels.
Where do change points go?
Wherever a reading would fall outside the staff limits you set, and on any row you mark with the CP remark.
Can I choose the back sight at a change point?
Yes. You are asked for it, with a recommended value. Answers outside the staff range or below the recommendation are refused, and leaving it blank stops the calculation.
Are toe points included?
Yes, for every layer after the natural surface. They come in with the remark “Toe Point”.
